CANOES

Continue past Doheny State Park and turn left at the next signal, Puerto Place. The parking lot for trailer parking and canoe rigging, 34500 Puerto Place, Dana Point, CA, is a short distance on your left and is the only left turn that can be made from Puerto Place. This parking lot opens at 5:30am.

NO PUBLIC PARKING FOR PASSENGER CARS AT THIS LOCATION.

TRAILERS
Each tow vehicle is required to pay for parking at a rate of $1 per hour from pay stations located within the Puerto Place lot. Pay station receipts must be displayed on the vehicle dashboard. Please purchase enough hours for your anticipated stay and/or add extra hours as needed. Trailers must be removed from the parking lot by 6pm. The Puerto Place lot will not be open for trailer parking on Friday. If you decide to bring your trailer down on Friday, you must pay for and park in the Embarcadero public launch ramp parking area, but you will be required to move into the Puerto Place lot Saturday morning. No rigging is allowed in the launch ramp parking lot.

RIGGING

The Puerto Place lot is adjacent to Doheny State Park and can be accessed by foot from the State Park via a trail at the north end of the beach near the jetty. Paddlers must walk from the State Beach to rig and launch as there is no personal vehicle parking allowed. For rigging, please bring cradles or padding to protect your canoe hulls and amas. The surface is concrete and asphalt. Canoes must be staged here until given permission to launch.

LAUNCHING

Registration and the steersperson’s meeting will take place in the Puerto Place lot where the SCORA RV is parked. When released to launch by SCORA officials, paddlers will carry or dolly-wheel canoes across Puerto Place street, through a back gate at the Embarcadero and down to the launch ramp. Please coordinate with your escort boat driver prior to moving to the launch ramp to minimize delays at the ramp. Crew exchange between races will also occur at the launch ramp. After the race, the men’s crews will paddle their canoes back to the launch ramp and transport the canoes back to the Puerto Place lot. Please be courteous and expeditious at the launch ramp when making your changes and transporting canoes. PLEASE NOTE: No launching or landing of canoes is permitted at Doheny State Beach. Should this occur, permits for future races could be jeopardized.

RACE COURSE

The Whitey Harrison Classic is a 20-mile 9-man race. Depending on conditions, the course typically runs from just outside the mouth of Dana Point Harbor to Main Beach in Laguna and back. The race usually finishes close to the Dana Point Harbor mouth, just off Doheny Beach

ESCORT BOAT

We will once again attempt to secure escort boats for outlying clubs who wish to compete in our race. The deadline for escort boats is July 31st. All escort boat requests should be sent to allenschade@cox.net. Outlying clubs will be given priority. Newport Beach clubs will be required to obtain their own escort boats.

Escort boats fee this year will be $700 for the day. If you request two boats, you will be required to pay both operators the full amount ($700) for their service regardless if you use them for only one race. If you wish to share an escort boat, it is up to the primary club to pay in full the escort boat driver and to collect payment from the secondary club. DOCC will ensure each escort boat has the proper insurance paperwork before submitting any names to requesting clubs.

After receiving contact information for your escort boat, it is recommended that you contact them as soon as possible. Exchange contact information and arrange to meet up at the launch ramp on race day. Each club will be responsible for communicating with their assigned escort boat/captains prior to race day. Additionally, each club will be responsible for payments and race arrangements with their associated captains. If you fail to make payment to your escort boat operator, your escort boat privilege will be denied the following year.

Dana Point launch ramp is public. DOCC has no authorization to regulate who enters and uses the facility. Please allow adequate time for unexpected delays for both your canoe club and escort boat driver. Consider arriving a day early and paying for your driver to use the guest dock.

Please note that ALL escort boats (even the ones you supply yourself) must sign a SCORA escort/safety boat waiver and release, and must supply the required proof of insurance with a minimum of $300,000 per occurrence. The waiver can be found at CLICK HERE Please have all crews watch SCORA’s video on escort boat best practices at CLICK HERE
