DIRECTIONS TO THE RACE

FROM THE NORTH

Take I-5 South to the Pacific Coast Hwy/Camino Las Ramblas exit just past San Juan Capistrano (approximately 15 miles South of the 405/5 interchange). After exiting, bear right at the fork and merge on to Pacific Coast Hwy (northbound). Drive 1 mile and turn left at Dana Point Harbor Drive (just past the pedestrian bridge).

FROM THE SOUTH
Take I-5 North to the Beach Cities/Camino Las Ramblas off-ramp, which veers left back under the freeway and then merges onto Pacific Coast Hwy. Drive 1 mile and turn left on Dana Point Harbor Drive (just past the pedestrian bridge).

PADDLERS: Once on Dana Point Harbor Drive, take your first left into Doheny State Park. The park opens at 6 a.m. ($15 per vehicle per day). Metered parking is also available.

CANOES: Continue past Doheny State Park and turn left on Embarcadero Place to access launch ramp (second left after the Doheny State Park entrance). A parking fee of $15 per canoe on a trailer will be charged (this means a trailer carrying 1 canoe will be charged $15; a trailer carrying 6 canoes will be charged $90). NO PUBLIC PARKING FOR PASSENGER CARS AT THIS LOCATION. This is a public launch ramp so GET THERE EARLY! It might be full by 6:30 a.m. on Saturday

TRAILERS/RIGGING/LAUNCHING

Trailers

The launch ramp operators have arranged a separate parking area for canoe trailers and rigging away from general public parking. The canoe parking area will be open on Saturday from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Unloading and loading of canoes must take place in this area. Please plan to have your canoe trailer arrive early. We recommend 6 a.m. at the very latest. Trailers must be removed from the parking area by 6 p.m.

If you decide to bring your trailer down on Friday, you may have to park in the public parking area, but you will be required to move into the designated canoe trailer parking area on Saturday morning.

Due to construction at the Dana Harbor Embarcadero, the size of the boat launch parking lot has shrunk dramatically with only room for ten (10) canoe trailers; tow vehicles will need to be unhitched and parked in an adjacent lot. Dana OCC will have volunteers to provide guidance. We are asking clubs to cooperate so harbors with multiple clubs, work together to consolidate to a minimum number of trailers. Please reference the SCORA email for additional information.

Rigging

There will be very little space for rigging your canoe at the Embarcadero. Please bring cradles to protect your canoe hulls and amas. The surface is concrete and asphalt.

Once your canoes are rigged, please consolidate and move them to be as close together to install spray skirts and extra paddles to allow room for other canoes to be rigged.

Doheny State Beach is where the SCORA RV and registration will take place. Paddlers will have to walk from the State Beach to the launch ramp as there is no personal vehicle parking. And this is where the crew exchange between women/coed crews will occur at the launch ramp. Please be courteous and expeditious in making your changes.

After the race, the men’s crews will paddle their canoes back to the launch ramp. Please be courteous and efficient when de-rigging your canoes, and loading them promptly onto your canoe trailer.

RACE COURSE

SCORA is trying something new for this race. For crews seeking a challenge, the Whitey Race will offer a 14-mile course. For those looking for something less rigorous, the Whitey race will simultaneously offer a 10-mile course. Register crews in race that is appropriate for the crew’s fitness and proficiency.

SCORA officials will be dropping a turn buoy at 5 miles, and dropping second turn buoy at 7 miles. We are relying on SCORA coaches to make sure your steersmen turn on the correct buoy.

Any crew that has not reached the turn buoy by 90 minutes will be turned early. Crews turned early will receive a DNF. SCORA officials will work to ensure all crews complete their race within 3 hours.
